Float, 2023 by Michelle May for Coast Series. Abstract art inspired by the reefs around the British Virgin Islands, snorkeling the area and exploring the underwater environment greatly affected by global warming each year. Painted post Irma, when life was regenerating and I was emotionally moved by the recovery of the islands, but still witnessing the demise of the reefs year over year.

This piece is inspired by the delicate reefs of the British Virgin Islands that are being damaged by significant temperature rise in the Caribbean waters. These delicate ecosystems are so important to human life. The magnificent colors of fish and vibrant plant life are struggling to survive and each visit you can visibly see the damage compared to the year before. My paintings are created by layering glazes of color creating a rich luminosity using a lot of motion, scrubbing, scrapping and attacking the canvas to create depth and texture. Active and engaging brushstrokes and detailed elements juxtaposed to wet on wet acrylics and oil pastel line work with destructive marks made by layering and scraping, creating a careful abstract composition that conveys a serene atmosphere while maintaining interest.

A diptych that is available separately.
